As a federally owned mobility and logistics group with over 200,000 employees, Deutsche Bahn AG (DB AG) is one of Germany's largest employers.
DB AG operates Europe's largest rail network through a large number of associated Group companies, transporting more than 12 million people every day.

Initial situation
The world of work is changing dramatically and is increasingly being driven by technology and digitalization. This is also having a particular impact on internationally active companies such as Deutsche Bahn (DB AG). Deutsche Bahn has set itself ambitious goals with its "Strong Rail" strategy: In the next few years, the number of passengers is to be doubled and 70 percent more goods are to be transported by rail. Digitalization forms the basis of strong rail. Alongside the creation of 100,000 new Deutsche Bahn careers and the necessary infrastructure activities, it is one of the central core elements of the strategy. As a result, the professional handling of large amounts of data is already essential and will become even more important in the future. Deutsche Bahn recognized early on that its employees are the key to success. As a "digital workforce", they are expected to process data sets in such a way that they can be used to create analyses that have a positive impact on the efficiency, transparency and traceability of decisions. This is how many people have succeeded in their careers at Deutsche Bahn thanks to modern data skills.

Challenge

Effective reskilling for all areas of the company

Complex personnel structure

Basic understanding required

In-service training

The Group-wide information strategy for identifying potential stakeholders was shaped by initial discussions with relevant executives. They have a key function in relation to employee training to ensure successful retention of qualifiable employees and to highlight identifiable synergies with the new "Strong Rail" rail strategy.

Using jointly defined user profiles, DB Training enabled StackFuel to evaluate which subsidiaries and business units would particularly benefit from further training in the area of data analytics and data science. The needs were analyzed and defined in the form of interviews and personal discussions.

At the same time, there was close cooperation with the various personnel committees and the works council of DB AG. The practical design of the training courses enables the skills acquired to be directly integrated into day-to-day business and Deutsche Bahn career paths.

In addition, the StackFuel training courses were advertised in a broad-based information campaign to raise awareness of the training measures. The internal measures included internal and external presentations, articles in DB Planet, explanatory videos created by StackFuel itself on important keywords such as "big data" or "artificial intelligence" on DB Lernwelt, a detailed report in DB Training's Insight magazine "Learning & Consulting" and personal recommendations via the DB Academy.

Results

Digital transformation on the rise

1

Hands-on in the world of data analytics and data science.

As a result, Deutsche Bahn offered four StackFuel trainings to employees. At the heart of the browser-based training environment is StackFuel's Data Lab, in which participants interactively perform programming exercises with real data sets and are thus introduced hands-on to the world of data analytics and data science.
2

Flexible access in multiple languages.

DB AG particularly appreciates the flexible time and location-independent access of the online training environment to the learning content, as the transfer of knowledge is self-determined in the daily work routine. In order to make the qualification accessible to a large number of internationally active employees, the training courses can also be accessed in German or English.
3

Intensive support for employees.

Throughout the learning process, the StackFuel mentoring team is available to provide personal support and answer questions for DB AG employees. All in all, the training courses are intensively supervised by kick-off dates, regular webinars, and final projects in order to guarantee the best possible learning success.
